Hello, I am Jodie - the founder, creator and sole maker behind Butterflies in Ballgowns.
I have been sewing for as long as I remember, having first been taught by my Mother and Grandmother as a child. My first ambition in life was to be a Fashion Designer, but when I started learning about the negative impacts that fashion has on the environment, I chose to follow other professional avenues instead. In 2023, I was diagnosed with PTSD, after working in the local homeless shelter, and decided it was time to follow my passions, so I enrolled in the Textiles Program at Selkirk College. After graduating in 2024, I realised that I could combine my long to care for others and save the world, with my passion for clothing, by creating sustainable, ethical and slow fashion - and that is how Butterflies in Ballgowns came to be what it is today.
The name Butterflies in Ballgowns was initially inspired by the idea of dressing up nature - putting a Ballgown on a Butterfly!! The natural world is one of my main inspirations, and it also has a huge impact on the resources I use as a designer and maker. I keep the health of the earth at the forefront of my mind when choosing the fabrics, yarns and dyes that I work with. All the materials that I use are either thrifted, upcycled or organic and sustainably sourced, helping to reduce Butterflies in Ballgowns impact on the planet.
Everything is handmade by me in my studio in Nelson, BC, Canada.
I hope you enjoy looking at and wearing my pieces as much as I enjoy making them, it is such an honour and it brings me so much pride to know that people like you are taking your time to look at and purchase them.
Have a beautiful day!
